Ten Thousand Villages of Asheville is a local nonprofit retail organization whose mission is to provide vital, fair income to artisans in the developing world by selling their products and telling their stories. The Asheville store has become self-sustaining through its sales over the last 16 years and generated a surplus in 2007. The store’s Board of Directors decided to give back to the local community in thanks for supporting our international mission. Store volunteers were asked to nominate nonprofits that benefit the local community. The store will make a donation in honor of its volunteers to these nonprofits during National Volunteer Week April 27 - May 3. These gifts are made on a one-time basis.

Board Chair, Alice Cohen, commented, "Ten Thousand Villages has partnered with nonprofits that benefit the local community through our Community Shopping program for the last four years. During a community shopping event, we donate 15% of our sales during a specified time to a partnering organization. This year we are also able to make some direct donations on behalf of our volunteers. Our Board of Directors felt that once our store’s needs are met, it is important to give back to our own community. We are so grateful to have such dedicated, local support for our international mission."

The following is the list of organizations (and a link to their website if one is available) that received a gift from Ten Thousand Villages of Asheville:
